Oakley has been working on AR glasses since 1997

Old news

“As an organization, we’ve been chasing this beast since 1997.”

That’s Colin Baden, Oakley?CEO telling Bloomberg in a recent interview that the new Google Project Glass augmented reality glasses are nothing new.

The company, which has already dabbled with tech glasses before in the guise of the Oakley Thump range of MP3 player sunglasses, says that it has no plans at the moment to release AR glasses, but confesses that the market is “ripe” for them.

“Ultimately, everything happens through your eyes, and the closer we can bring it to your eyes, the quicker the consumer is going to adopt the platform,” added Baden in the interview.?

However rather than have you walking down the street looking to see what the weather was like, Oakley’s CEO explains in the interview that the focus is more than likely to be sports related to begin with.

“Obviously, you can think of many applications in the competitive field of sports,” Baden told Bloomberg. “That’s the halo point of where we would begin, but certainly you can transcend that into a variety of other applications.”

That should tie in nicely with the company’s range of sports glasses, especially its snowboarding offering that could theoretically help you plot the perfect course down the mountain.

Google founder snapped wearing Augmented Reality glasses

Sergey Brin shows off eyewear
Google founder snapped wearing Augmented Reality glasses

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been photographed wearing the company’s much talked about Project Glass Augmented Reality specs.

Confirming they are very much the real deal Brin posed for pictures with blogger Robert Scoble, at a charity dinner for, somewhat ironically, the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Brin was quick to inform Scoble that the glasses were very much a prototype, though Scoble said he saw a blue light flash to the right of Brin’s eye which he deemed to be Brin reading his Google+ profile. We assume he was joking.

Prototype or not, with Brin so publicly showcasing the Project Glass specs, reports of their arrival before the year’s out might not be as farfetched as some claimed.

When Google first announced the Project Glass project, they did so with a promotional video demonstrating how the eyewear could ‘improve’ your day-to-day life.

Pocket-lint has since stumbled across another version of the same video, albeit with what might prove to be an altogether more realistic account of what we can expect.

Less Augmented Reality, more ADmented Reality.

Google has started testing its much hyped and rumoured augmented reality glasses, the company has confirmed, sharing the first stages of the trail with Google Plus users.

“A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment.” The Google Plus post by Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thurn starts. ?

The trio say that they are sharing the information because “we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.”

By the look of the video, titled Project Glass: One day… Google hopes that the glasses will give you a heads up display to your life allowing you see weather reports or text messages from your mates without having to look at your phone or computer.

The video also suggests that people will be able to talk to the headset as well as get mapping information or the latest traffic data about the train journey they are trying to take.

Other examples in the 3 minute video suggesting what will be available in the future will be check-in’s, the ability to take photos, and of course the chance to of course Google Plus your experiences.

Google is expected to launch the AR glasses later in the year, but wants to make sure that customers are ready for a move whilst the promo videos suggest people will look cool, will more likely make the look like the Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Android powered Google AR glasses to land this year

According to the New York Times
Android powered Google AR glasses to land this year. Glasses, Augmented Reality, Google, Android 0

According to a report by the New York Times tech section Bits, we could be seeing the much-speculated Android powered Google AR glasses landing before 2012 is up.

We first got wind of the project at the end of last year when 9to5Google ran a story claiming it was an open secret that Google was working?on wearable technology in its secret Google X lair, and that the search giant was “in late prototype stages of wearable glasses” that “provide a display with a heads up computer interface”.

The Google-centric blog then followed this up earlier this month with claims that the HUD glasses “have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps” and “will also take pictures”.

The NYT’s report now states that “several Google employees familiar with the project” have said the clever-specs will go on sale by the end of the year and would “cost around the price of current smartphones” (which is a bit vague, we know).

The “Android-based” glasses will apparently feature a small screen, 3G or 4G data connectivity, “a number of sensors including motion and GPS” as well as a “unique navigation system”.

Steve Lee, a Google engineer who apparently created Google Latitude is said to be involved with a view to having layer based location data at the forefront (literally) of the design and Google co-founder Sergey Brin is also purported to be heavily involved in the project.

The report states that Google will gauge user interest before it decides upon potential business models to fully monetise the tech.

We know a certain cyborg assassin from 2029 who may be interested…..
