Twitter suggests who to follow according to your web history

Separate the ‘tweet’ from the chaff
Twitter uses web history to suggest followers

Twitter is changing the way it recommends to its users who to follow based on the websites they frequent.

Previously, when a new Tweeter signs up the suggestions tend to be the likes of Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna. In other words those with mammoth amounts of followers.

However, the new approach aims as making suggestions that are more relevant to you and your tastes. For example, if you spend a majority of time visiting travel sites, you’ll be recommend accounts that deal with that particular industry along with people who share a similar interest, complete with preview of their latest tweets.

The revamped recommendation section will also appear on current Twitter users accounts as well as newbies. New users will be able to receive recommendations through the “Tailor Twitter based on my recent websites visits” option, whereas seasoned pros can select the “Personalization” option in the account settings.

The information is gathered from websites that have integrated Twitter buttons or widgets, which Twitter in turn uses to recommended users with similar interests to each other.

Twitter has vocally supported the ‘Do Not Track’ (DNT) motion when it comes to web browsing, so if you don’t like the idea of Twitter monitoring your web movements you can always switch the setting off.

Panasonic to launch another new Android handset at MWC… tablet to follow

EXCLUSIVE: Premium model
Panasonic to launch another new Android handset at MWC

Panasonic is to announce another new mobile phone, following yesterday’s Eluga launch, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.?

The handset, which sources tell us will be even more premium than the Eluga, will feature a bigger screen and front-facing camera. The display on the handset will apparently not be OLED, rather a new Panasonic-designed technology.?

Inside, the new Panasonic phone will be a dual-core processor, keeping the handset’s Android operating system ticking along.?

We don’t have any more on the new Panasonic phone unfortunately, other than that it will utilise Lumix technology, from the company’s cameras, in some way.?

Speaking to a source within Panasonic we were also told the company plans to launch a consumer-oriented tablet device this year different to the Toughbook Android tablet.?

Sadly, we don’t have pictures or names yet for either the phone or tablet. Expect to see a lot more, however, on Monday at MWC.?

So, Android is the future of things for Panasonic by the looks of it. If yesterday’s Eluga announcement and these two new pieces of portable kit are anything to go by, 2012 is the year they head into the European mobile market in a big way.

Safari to follow Chrome with unified search bar in Mountain Lion

One bar to rule them all

Apple has confirmed to Pocket-lint that after years of waiting, its desktop browser, Safari, will be getting a single unified search and URL bar in the future.

“There is no longer two fields, there is just one that you type into, either a URL or a search term.” Apple tells Pocket-lint.

The new feature – which has been available in competing browsers from Firefox and Google’s Chrome – will be rolled out in the new version of Safari that will be launched alongside the next version of Apple’s operating system OS X?Mountain Lion in the summer.

The new OS, released as a developer preview on Thursday 16 February, will bring with it more than 100 features, but Safari users are likely to get really excited about this small change.?

Until Mountain Lion is released, users who want to a unified search can do so with the help of a third party plugin called Safari Omnibar.

On installing the unofficial Safari bolt-on, users can trick the current browser into ditching the two separate boxes at the top of the browser window in favour of one single one.

However, it’s worth pointing out that the plugin modifies Safari in a way it wasn’t designed for.

The new feature is available in the new version of Apple OS X Mountain Lion.?Apple has told Pocket-lint that the new features and new operating system, Apple Mac OS X Mountain Lion, will be out in the summer. Developers who want to get started with the new features can do so via the Apple Mac OS X Mountain Lion developer preview out on Thursday 16 February.?

Windows Phone 7 Tango, the follow up to Mango?

Dancing time
Windows Phone 7 Tango, the follow up to Mango?. Phones, Mobile phones, Windows Phone 7, Windows phone 7 tango, Microsoft 0

Windows Phone 7 Mango isn’t even out yet, but that hasn’t stopped people touting the next codenamed version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7?operating system.

According to sources, it will be know as Tango – as in the dance, not the drink.

Since the launch of the mobile OS in October 2010, the company has enjoyed calling it’s next versions things that end in “o”.

First there was NoDo (short for No Donuts), then there was Mango (that’s due out later this year), and now it seems the WP7 update we’ll be talking about in 2012 will be Tango.

Sadly we don’t have any further information on when it will launch, what features it will have, or whether it will involve the phone responding to you dancing thanks to Kinect support (a wild guess).

Either way, you can be sure we’ll do our best to keep you up to date with all the latest news as it happens.

In the meantime, why don’t you check out our extensive Windows Phone 7 Mango preview.

Twitter Follow me button takes on Facebook Like

Follow, follow, follow
Twitter Follow me button takes on Facebook Like. Software, Online, Twitter, Social networking, Facebook 0

Facebook’s had it for years, but now Twitter is finally getting into the followers game by allowing people to add a Follow button to their website.?

Like the Facebook Like buttons seen across the web already, Twitter users can now show their love for their favourite websites by quickly clicking on a dedicated Twitter Follow button.

Launched on Tuesday, the company now lets anyone add a simple Follow button that can be built for you by visiting Twitter, telling Twitter your user name and deciding whether you want your follower count to be shown.

All that’s left after that is to put the three lines of code on your website for your visitors to click and then you get a button like this:

“Today we’re excited to launch the Follow Button, a new way to discover and instantly follow Twitter accounts directly from the websites you visit everyday,” said the company on a blog post on Twitter’s site.

According to Twitter “People who follow your account are much more likely to retweet and engage with your Tweets, and to repeatedly visit your website.”

Sadly the button isn’t as dynamic as Facebook’s plethora of options, and won’t highlight Twitter users that follow you in the same way that Facebook does, however it should increase your follower count – it’s certainly easier to now follow sites with the button.?

You can follow Pocket-lint on Twitter by clicking on our “new” follow button in the right hand column.
