Facebook trialling ‘pay to promote posts’ in New Zealand

Facebook users in New Zealand are being given the option of paying to highlight particular wall posts and updates.

Payments of 25p, 50p and even ?1.25 have already been paid to the social network via credit card and PayPal. In return Facebook will promote posts by keeping them at the top of news feeds and highlighting them to other Facebook users.?

When Facebook users in New Zealand first stumbled across the offer, it was initially thought to be a scam.

However, Facebook has since confirmed that the offer is genuine telling the BBC that it is constantly looking at new features to implement on the site.

“This particular test is simply to gauge people’s interest in this method of sharing with their friends.”

Though Facebook has emphasised that it is only trialling the “pay to promote post” functionality, the move is sure to anger Facebook users who have already complained about the continually changing platform.

Yet like a bad drug, Facebook has such a grip over society, despite complaints over changes to the social network, the number of users continues to grow with an estimated 900 million worldwide.

Facebook recently announced it was set to have its own App Center, a hub for all Facebook compatible applications.

Facebook launches social App Center

Shop and share
Facebook launches social App Center

Facebook will soon have its own application marketplace enabling users to discover and download apps from one social hub.

The likes of Draw Something, Spotify and Pinterest will all be available from the App Center that itself can be accessed through Facebook’s website or through its iOS and Android app.

Only the cream of the crop will feature in the App Center with Facebook using user ratings to determine what applications are listed.

Though Facebook’s App Center will list what applications are available, should you wish to download one through your smartphone, you will need to do so through Apple’s App Store or via Google Play though the App Center will take you directly to the relevant link.

Each app listed will include a detail page, which must be provided by the developer, including screenshots, how many people are using the app on Facebook, what platform it’s available on as well as the user rating.

Facebook is expected to roll out its App Center before the end of May.

Help write a hit record through Budweiser's Facebook page

Budweiser is offering its Facebook followers the chance to make music history by asking them to collaborate with singer songwriter?Laura Jeanne on a forthcoming single. Participants are invited to submit lyrics to a song about “dreaming big” and the very best will be incorporated into the final version, to be released in June.

Laura Jeanne is a UK artist and finalist in Budweiser’s Big Time talent show screened on ABC in the US. Her track will be offered as a free download on the Budweiser Facebook page, which has over 150,000 followers in the UK alone, so there’s plenty of potential listeners.

“The Social Song” is believed to be the first of its kind, with an?unprecedented?number of participants who could,?technically, collaborate. Those wishing to take part should head over to the Budweiser UK Facebook page, where a dedicated tab appeared at 11am today.

“To win a spot as a finalist on a show like Budweiser’s The BIG TIME was a dream come true,” said Jeanne.

“Having this platform to start my career and follow my ambition to become an artist is brilliant and I hope everyone wants to be part of my new song. It’s so exciting to realise that so many people can be involved.”

The submission process finishes on 25 May and the finished song will be available to download on the page from 11 June.

Facebook for Windows Phone is about to get a big update, according to its developers.

Details of the next version (v2.5) of the social networking app for Microsoft’s mobile platform have been published in a Facebook post.

“The team has been working hard over the past few weeks on building the next version of Facebook for Windows Phone,” says the team behind the app.

The new update will bring even more features than the rather large update?that the app has seen already this year.

Facebook v2.5 will bring:

- Threaded messaging:?Full Facebook threaded messaging including group messaging, all in a beautiful Metro style design.

- Tagging:?Now you can tag friends and locations in your posts in the “with” and “at” format.

- Delete posts and comments:?Use the tap and hold context menu to delete posts and comments from your wall.

- Active links in posts:?Tap on links in posts to go directly to the content.

- Updates to the photo comments and likes page:?The photo comments and likes page has been updated to match the posts comments and likes page. You can see a hint of the image at the top of the page, pull down and you can see the whole thing.

- You can now “like” comments!

The developers say the app is going through the final rounds of testing before being released.
