Nearly 18 months after it first appeared as a prototype at trade shows, Sony has announced its eagerly anticipated flagship digital SLR, the Alpha 900 – finally giving Minolta/Konica Minolta users a full frame option. Featuring the 24.6 MP CMOS sensor announced in January, the Alpha 900 offers several enticing features, including sensor-shift image stabilization, a super 100% coverage viewfinder and the same high resolution screen as the Alpha 700 (the new model also inherits most of the 700′s features, menus and external controls)

Leica has today announced the ultra-compact D-LUX 3. This new camera (based on the Panasonic LX-2) has a ten megapixel 16:9 ratio CCD, Leica 4x wide angle optical zoom lens (28 to 112 mm equiv.) with optical image stabilization and a 2.8″ 16:9 ratio LCD monitor. (While this camera is based on the LX-2 it has had image processing adjustments as defined by Leica).

Perhaps the worst kept secret of any recent announcement Nikon has now officially revealed the compact, professional, twelve megapixel, full-frame (FX format) Nikon D700. From the outside the D700 is virtually identical to the D300, albeit for its larger ‘full frame’ viewfinder, internally it’s almost identical to the D3, except for a slightly slower shutter (five frames per second up to eight frames per second with the MB-D10 battery grip). By comparison it also includes several function improvements over the D3 including Image Sensor cleaning (‘sensor shake’), more flexible ‘hard button’ programming, virtual horizon in Live View and different DX mode indication on the focusing screen. The D700 also becomes the first professional Nikon DSLR to sport a built-in flash. As far as competition is concerned the D700 really only faces the Canon EOS 5D (and any replacement that may be in the works). On sale in July for US$2999 or €2599 body only.

Nikon has introduces four new S-series Coolpix ultra-compact cameras, the S630, S620, S230 and S220. The S630 has a 7x zoom and 12MP sensor, the S620 also offers 12MP with only a 4x zoom (but starting at 28mm equiv). The S230 and S220 are both 10MP models with 3x optical zooms. S230 has a 3.0″ touch-screen while the S200 makes do with a conventional 2.5″ affair.

Canon’s A630 is a great follow up to the popular A610, and at 8 megapixels, a fantastic choice for point-and-shoot photographers. The A630 is another great mainstream camera from Canon; extremely affordable yet technologically advanced yet easy to use and understand.
