With BMX already part of the Olympic 2012 programme, and rumours that skateboarding could be included as part of a future Games, I decided to focus on this urban skatepark in Brixton, South East London, for this month’s sporting challenge.

I chose a moderate wide-angle focal length to include some of the surrounding buildings and place the main subject of the picture in context. I also decided to include as many of the participants as possible, rather than focus on one, to indicate how popular these “sports” actually are.

Finally, I processed the image in Nik Silver Efex 2 to achieve a suitably gritty look for this challenging urban arena.

Hope you like it!

Snip Snaps

This is a off-challenge blog post.

For 15 years, Malcolm has cut my hair in his shop on Oxford Road in the city centre. I have always looked forward to my haircut every month as it’s always a pleasure to talk with him. After 15 years, we have got to know each other quite well.

Today was his last day in the shop. He has worked here for 25 years. But the lease is up and it’s time for him to take a break. When he said to me that he intended to close, I proposed to take his photo in the salon on his last day. Initially, he wasn’t too keen on the idea. I said that it would be nice to record the day for him. He asked could I take a photo of him cutting his grandson’s hair – who would be his last ‘customer’ in the shop, I thought it was a lovely idea. His daughter and granddaughter came too.

I am terrible with flash lighting (and lighting in general) so the photos are certainly not anything special – but I am happy with them as you can see the love that he and his family have together.

I will still see Malcolm as he will cut my hair at my home every month :)

Challenge #15: Breakfast

The challenge: Breakfast

The challenger: Jack Schofield, using the WB2000

The result

Jack's Easter special breakfast

My special Easter breakfast

At the moment, my usual breakfast is a glass of cranberry juice and a bowl of extra-nutty muesli with milk. Muesli is not the most photogenic subject — it’s just a cut above sawdust — so I thought I’d revert to an earlier time, when  used to start the day with a couple of boiled eggs and toast soldiers. Because it was Easter, I decided to use seasonal eggs, with the result you see above.

Taking “still life” pictures can be a technical challenge, and it is usually done by specialists in studio work. It can take an hour or two to set up the lighting, using tissue paper and/or reflector screens to soften and direct the light, with a spotlight to provide a “kicker”. Photos are often taken on a large-format camera, which will certainly be mounted on a hefty tripod. Nobody would choose to do it with a handheld snapshot camera like the Samsung WB2000, but I thought I could make it work by making my subject portable. Instead of moving lights around, I’d move the subject around. I wanted to be able to put it on the floor, or move it quickly from room to room, if necessary.

So, I set up a wooden breakfast tray with my eggs, toast soldiers, salt and pepper, cranberry juice, cup of coffee and so on, and tried to find the best lighting effects using the sunlight coming in through the window. You can see what I was working with in the picture right at the bottom.

I thought the best shot would be the view looking straight down, with my not-circular plate (Royal Doulton, Autumn’s Glory) framed by the wooden tray, and set off by the red place-mat. That was my plan. Since digital pictures are free, I took quite a few variations at different angles, like the one below. On balance, I preferred the shots where I used the telephoto end of the WB2000′s zoom and focussed on the centre of the action. All the exposures were done on the automatic settings, and none of the pictures has been cropped or otherwise changed in Photoshop or Paint.net. They have been reduced from 3.4 megabytes to about 230K, but otherwise, what you see is exactly what you get.

It’s something of a mantra for action and street photographers that if your pictures aren’t good enough, you weren’t close enough. I hope it worked for my breakfast as well.
