The Tamron 2x teleconverter for canon EF lenses

Tele-converters are an inexpensive way of doubling the focal length of a lens, with a 2x converter a 50mm lens becomes a 100mm lens and so on. The problem seems to be with Zoom lenses the loss of light caused by the tele-converter (which may be up to 2 stops with a 2x converter) seems to stop slower lenses from auto-focusing. With a Tamron 2x EF tele-converter all my zoom lenses would only autofocus at their most wide angle settings, only my fast prime lenses which are both f1.8 auto-focused quickly and with no problems at all.
