Google doodle celebrates Italitan composer, not a proposal in sight

Anyone for a haircut?
Google doodle celebrates Italitan composer, not a proposal in sight . Online, Google, Google doodles 0

Google doodles continue to get more random by the day – perhaps they are running out of ideas – so for 29 February instead of picking something to do with the chance women get every four years to propose to their man, Google has opted for the birthday of Gioachino Antonio Rossini.

Who?

Well in a five- second history lesson (courtesy of Wikipedia of course) Rossini was an Italian composer who wrote 39 operas. He is best-known for operas including the Italian comedies Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and La Cenerentola (Cinderella) and the French-language epics Mo?se et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell (William Tell).

According to Wiki, until his retirement in 1829, Rossini was the most popular opera composer in history.

The doodle features a number of frogs (Leap Year – geddit?) performing a song. Sadly there is no reference to Paul McCartney and his frog song – We All Stand Together.

Durango: Xbox 720 gets a codename?

Developer spills the beans
Durango: Xbox 720 gets a codename?. Gaming, Microsoft, Xbox 720, Durango 0

Durango, that’s the new codename for the next generation of Xbox according to several sources slowly ring to the top of the pile on the internet at the moment.

The name has been cropping up all over the place for those looking closely. First there was a story on gaming website Kotaku, then a deleted tweet from a Crytek game developer (they of Crisis and Timesplitters 2 fame).

The new Tweet is the most interesting of the bunch though as it suggested there was a secret developer summit under way in London for the new console.

“Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks,” said Sean Tracy, from Crytek before deleting his gaff.

Rumours have been circling for some time that Microsoft has already started working on the next-generation device, previously dubbed the Xbox 720, although the company has been keen to state that the Xbox 360 still has plenty of life left in it.

The Xbox 720 or project Durango is expected to debut at this years E3 gaming conference in June.

What’s key here is that Microsoft has a tendency to codename its next -eneration projects after cities and Durango fits the bill. Before the Microsoft Kinect was launched it was known as Project Natal, a town in Brazil.?

The Whole Foods Kinect-powered trolley that helps you with your shop

Helping hand
The Whole Foods Kinect-powered trolley that helps you with your shop. Gadgets, Microsoft, Microsoft Kinect, Whole Foods, Concepts 0

Pushing the shopping trolley around your local supermarket can be such a drag, and that’s presumably what the creators of the Kinect powered shopping trolley thought when they came up with the idea of a trolley that helps you to do your shopping.

Not your average trolley that you find in the canal, this high-tech version is fitted with a screen, a Kinect sensor from Microsoft and the ability to talk to you. ?

All that tech means the shopping trolley will not only follow you around the shop because it can detect your movement via the Kinect sensor, but also scan what products to put in the trolley ticking them off your list at the same time.

Demoed by supermarket chain Whole Foods in the US, the sensor and accompanying gadgetry will also be able to warn you when you put something wrong into the trolley – handy if you’ve got kids.

In the example given by Microsoft, the shopper puts into the trolley some spaghetti with gluten in it even though the owner has stated that he has a gluten allergy. It then tells him where the right product is in the store.

When you’ve completed your shopping list, the trolley will tell you that you’ve finished, check you out – because it knows what you’ve put in – and let you pay straight away because it already has your details via a loyalty card.

Developed by Chaotic Moon the project is literally weeks old but shows what possibilities lie ahead for shopping at your local supermarket in the future.
