Dell Streak(s) ahead with Android 2.1 update

Update from O2 due September
Dell Streak(s) ahead with Android 2.1 update

O2 is reportedly readying an Android update for its Dell Streak customers.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean Froyo – it’s simply a jump up to ?clair (2.1) – but it does mean;

720p video recording from the rear facing camera.

Native multi-touch support including gestures such as pinch-to-zoom.

Document editing via the QuickOffice application.

Support for live wallpapers.

Support for multiple mail accounts including Exchange email and contacts sync.

The news was broken over at The Really Mobile Project, who is reporting that the update could be rolling out as soon as 1 September.

There’s no news for US Dell Streakers as to when AT&T might start updating the software on the other side of the pond just yet.

My other phone’s a dress

The little black number that can dial other numbers
My other phone's a dress

There’s a lot of talk these days about gadgets becoming wearable tech – whereby a device can become a fashion accessory if it is deemed stylish enough.

And it seems that London based designers CuteCircuit has taken this idea literally with its M-Dress – which is a little black dress, and also a phone.

The dress has a small antenna sewn into the hem (at knee level to reduce radiation to your brain) and has controls, a mic and a speaker built into one of the sleeves. The SIM card slots in just behind the label.

You can answer calls simply by raising your arm to your ear and hanging up is as easy as dropping your arm.

Your dress will even ring to let you know that you’re receiving a call – with personalised ringtones available too.

You can only store two numbers on the phone though, so choose carefully what they’ll be before heading out.

The M-Dress is out next year, but there’s no word yet as to how much it’ll cost.

Google Doodles that are out of this world

Space inspired Google doodles celebrating our love of the cosmos
Google Doodles that are out of this world

Space, the final frontier, well that phrase is to some, but it seems that the chaps over in the?Google doodles?department rather like the final frontier and anything that can be found to help celebrate the awesome landmarks that as mere men we’ve achieved.

Doodles are known as the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists.

Whether it is the beginning of spring – Albert Einstein’s birthday – or the 50th anniversary of understanding DNA, the doodle team never fails to find artistic ways to celebrate these unique events, so says the company.

The doodle team has created over 300 doodles for Google.com in the United States and over 700 have been designed internationally with a whole team dedicated to creating new doodles when the opportunity arises.

Whether that’s monkeys, celebrating the 50th anniversary of NASA or just praising the fact that we’ve made it to Mars, here are the best Space Google Doodles from the last 12 years.

2000

1 May – 5 May

The space inspired doodles start back in May 2000 although Google doesn’t, in their doodle history, give a reason for the sudden appearance of a couple of aliens on the Google logo.

The aliens actually end up taking over the logo for 5 days stealing it and taking it home with them.

?

?

2004

15 January

Space doesn’t make a comeback for another 4 years, presumably because the aliens are happy with their logo find. Although how is this for spooky? When the space theme does reappear, it’s with those aliens sitting on the logo and the Sprint rover on Mars.

8 June

Google’s second “o” gets turned into Venus

?

?

4 October

Spaceship one wins the X Prize and a hallowed spot in Google’s logo

?

?

2005

20 July

It’s already been Venus, why not the moon? That’s the case for the anniversary of the lunar landing in this Google doodle from 2005.

?

?

2007

12 April

On 12?April 1961, he became the first human in?outer space?and the first to orbit the?Earth. 46 years later Yuri doesn’t get a look in on the logo, but his spacecraft the Vostok 3KA-3 does, becoming, yep you guessed it, one of the Google “o”s

?

?

4 October

Keeping the Russian theme, Sputnik gets its own Google doodle in 2007 as well. This time the?robotic spacecraft missions launched by the?Soviet Union are celebrated 50 years after the first of these,?Sputnik 1, launched the first human-made object to orbit the Earth.

?

?

2008

29 July

The 50th anniversary of NASA shows a big rocket for the “l” in the Google logo, the Sprint rover on Mars, the moon lander and of course space. And yes the moon and Mars double as the “o”s.

?

?

2009

14 March

Giovanni Schiaparelli’s birthday some 174 years prior is the reason for this space inspired doodle. Schiaparelli, if you’re wondering, was an?Italian?astronomer?and?science historian known for his studies of Mars.

?

?

20 July

The moon landing revisited 4 years after Google first doodled the historic event. This time the Google logo is made from craters in the moons surface.

?

?

22 July

A total eclipse of the sun. Google’s “o” gets the eclipse treatment.

?

?

12 August

The Perseid Meteor Shower might look exciting in real life, but it doesn’t fit that well into the logo. Still it captures the imagination of star gazers for a day in August 2009.

?

?

5 September – 21 September

To celebrate the birthday of HG Wells Google ran three doodles on three consecutive weeks without telling anyone. Mass hysteria, panic and calls of the end of the world – just like the book War of the Worlds, and Google revealed its master plan. The world laughed and then moved on.

?

?

3 October

Moon viewing day is huge every year in Japan and this dedicated Moon Viewing Google doodle celebrated just that in 2009.

?

?

13 November

NASA finds water on the moon, Google celebrates with a water and moon inspired logo.

?

?

2010

24 April

Travelling the vortex of space for 20 years earns you a Google doodle, and here the Hubble Space Telescope gets its 24 hours of fame.

?

?

28 May

Milutin Milankovic was a?Serbian?geophysicist?and?civil engineer, best known for his theory of?ice ages, suggesting a relationship between?Earth’s long-term?climate changes?and periodic changes in?its orbit, now known as?Milankovic cycles, clearly someone in the Google doodle team is a fan.

?

?

13 June

Hayabusa?was an?unmanned spacecraft?developed by the?Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency?to?return a sample of material?from a small?near-Earth asteroid, named?25143 Itokawa, to?Earth?for further analysis. As you might of gathered it returned to Earth on 13 June 2010.

?

19 August

Belka and Strelka spent a day in space aboard?Korabl-Sputnik-2?(Sputnik 5) on August 19, 1960, before safely returning to Earth. And here their space helmets become the “o”‘s of Google’s logo.

Elonex ebook: The next chapter in ebook readers and tablets?. Tablets, ebook readers, elonex, eink, Elonex ebook, IFA2010, 0

PC maker Elonex are the latest company to confirm they will be launching multiple ebooks and tablets at IFA 2010 when the show starts on Thursday.

In an invite to Pocket-lint detailing their new announcement and inviting us to the company’s show stand, Elonex confirms that it will be launching both colour and eInk eBooks models at IFA.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of virtually every other manufacturer who will also be launching ebook readers and tablets at the German tech fair.

Annoyingly the IFA lady (that’s the one in the red in the picture) has her hand in the way of the key details, but we can make out that the eInk eBook will sport a 6-inch screen.

There is also a promise of a “World’s First”, but we aren’t sure what exactly.

Perhaps hoping to sell the device into company’s like Barnes and Noble in the US and Waterstones in the UK the other bullet points reference a “White label content website” and “White label publishing portal” with the promise of a “% of future revenue / sales.

Pocket-lint will be at IFA all week bringing you the latest news as it happens.

We will keep you posted.

VIDEO: How much faster is Chrome 7 to Chrome 6? About 20 fish faster

Fishtank video shows GPU acceleration in action
VIDEO: How much faster is Chrome 7 to Chrome 6? About 20 fish faster. Software, PC software, Mac software, Firefox, Chrome, IE9, Microsoft, Google, Browsers, Video, 0

Google on Monday confirmed that Chrome 7 will feature GPU acceleration allowing it to pull on your computers graphics chip to speed up the browsing experience.

But what difference does that actually make in the real word??Daniel Cawrey over at?thechromesource.com thought the same thing so put together a quick video showing the difference between to version of Chrome – version 6 vs version 7.?

The end result is no surprise – Chrome 7 is considerably faster being able to show more fish in the fish tank at any one time.

“Just so that we all know that hardware acceleration in Chrome 7 isn’t some fancy pipe dream, I decided to test it out using Microsoft’s FishIE Tank test which measures the frame rate that a browser can load a tank full of fishes,” says Cawrey. “I used the latest beta of Chrome 6 and the latest Canary version of Chrome 7 with the?command line switch “–enable-accelerated-compositing”?which turns on GPU processing. Neither of the browsers had any extra extensions installed.

Chrome 7 is available in beta for user to try on their own, although it’s worth pointing out that it is still an early beta and therefore shouldn’t be used for work critical things.

Both Microsoft’s IE9 and Mozilla’s Firefox 4 are both expected to add GPU acceleration shortly, with Microsoft expected to add the new capability when it launches Internet Explorer 9 on 15 September.

Adobe has been using GPU acceleration in its software packages since it launched CS5 earlier this year, helping speed up a number of processes, something that Google is clearly hoping will help when it comes to loading websites and improving your browser experience.
